Planting & Growing Guide

For the best crops, plant your fig tree in a warm, sheltered, sunny location. A south-facing position against a wall is ideal, where the tree can benefit from reflected heat and protection from cold winds.

Fig trees thrive in fertile, moisture-retentive yet well-drained soil, preferably with a slightly alkaline pH. Before planting, enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost to encourage strong establishment and healthy growth.

Naturally vigorous, fig trees often produce the best harvests when their roots are slightly restricted. This can be achieved by planting within a 60cm (2ft) square, open-bottomed brick or concrete enclosure with a 15cm (6in) layer of broken stone at the base. Alternatively, figs perform exceptionally well in large patio containers filled with a quality free-draining compost.

Container-grown fig trees should be repotted every two years to maintain vigour and productivity. If you plan to train your fig against a wall or fence, install support wires before planting to make shaping and maintenance easier.

With the right conditions, your fig tree will reward you with years of beautiful foliage and delicious home-grown fruit.
